An intellectual property lawyer is someone who fights for or defends the rights of ownership of their client’s intellectual property. They are legal professionals who deal with copyright, trademarks, patents, trade secrets, and more. Intellectual property actually refers to the creations of a mind for which exclusive rights are recognized (Raysman, R., Adler, K., & Pisacreta, E. 1998. “Intellectual Property Licensing: Forms and Analysis” in Law Journal Press. ISBN 973-58852-086-9). Intellectual property attorneys will often represent their clients over a broad range of legal fields including: corporate law, entertainment, and others areas which involve an individual’s creative property. They can offer legal advice and counsel in the creation, identification, protection, transfer and licensing of intellectual property (IP) and other related issues. Intellectual property lawyers have the ability to perform a variety of duties on behalf of their clients. These tasks may include transactions (filing copyrights registrations), filing lawsuits (initiate lawsuits on your behalf), and giving advice and counsel.
